Renunciation, Refuge and Responsibility

Mahasukha Center, Los Angeles, CA · September 9, 2011 · Public talk

A public talk from Los Angeles, September 2011: three aspects of a sane life in a crazy culture.

On a Friday night in September 2011, at the end of his US visit, Lama Marut gave this talk at the Mahasukha Center in Los Angeles - thanking  Cliff, Rick and the board for keeping “this oasis in Los Angeles” going.

“A spiritual life and a sane life are the same life”
LM talks about living sanely in a crazy culture through three foundational aspects of a spiritual life:

  • Renunciation – knowing what to give up and what to take up - starting with renouncing the idea that the next purchase, or the next person, will finally make us happy.
  • Refuge – a teacher who knows the way home, a path that works, and a community of people who are all trying.
  • Responsibility – for our own happiness, and for the privileged lives we have.

The talk ends with a long question-and-answer session (some of the questions are hard to hear but the audio continues after the questions are asked).

The full talk is now available to listen to and download.
