In July 2014, in the middle of his Be Nobody book tour, Lama Marut taught Middle Way Course 19 in Austin, Texas: four classes over two days on Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra, using his own translation.
“There are probably a lot more entertaining experiences you could have in Austin on a Monday or Tuesday night,” he told the class. “It’s not entertainment. It’s meant to be transformational.”
Reading the Yoga Sūtra as a practical guidebook, he works through the eight limbs of yoga in four classes:
- The Meaning and Purpose of Yoga – stopping the churnings of the mind so we can rest in our true nature.
- Ethics – the mental afflictions, karma, and the restraints and commitments: “the great vow of yoga.”
- Meditation – posture, breath, withdrawing the senses, concentration and meditation.
- Full Integration – samādhi as lucid dreaming, and the wave that learns it is the ocean.
Each class comes with an exercise to practise for a week, so you can take it as a four-week course at home.
The course was organised thanks to Karl and Denise and the Inner Journey TX group, and held at Yoga Yoga, where Lama Marut was given the “Kickin’ Asana” T-shirt he’s wearing in the photo ;)
All four classes are now available to listen to and download, with the course book.
