Having played “the bad cop” on renunciation, Lama Marut turns to compassion. He sets compassion (karuṇā) and loving kindness (maitrī) against their opposites, ill will and envy, defines bodhicitta as an all-consuming wish to become enlightened for the sake of others, and qualifies the idea that a bodhisattva 'delays' enlightenment. The class closes with the seven-step cause-and-effect meditation – from equanimity and seeing all beings as our mothers to taking personal responsibility: “It’s my job.”
