How and Why to be Happy

Go Yoga, Brooklyn, NY · January 2007 · Public talk

A public talk from Brooklyn, January 2007: starting from the proposition that 'the purpose of life is to be happy' and looking at the Yoga Sutra's advice on how to get there.

In this public talk at Go Yoga, Brooklyn, Lama Marut suggests that "the purpose of life is to be happy, so that we can help others be happy too".

He questions the inner voice that says happiness is shallow or selfish and shows how our usual strategies for getting happy keep failing, and why the things we chase can never truly satisfy us.

Drawing on Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra - especially the five main mental afflictions (kleśas) and the four misperceptions that keep us in the “chain of pain" - the class reviews the 'laws of karma' that help produce happiness: if you want something, make sure others get it first; if you don’t want something, never do it to anyone else; to keep something, give it away.
