Dharma Essentials Course III: Applied Meditation

Taught in Rockport, Cape Ann, MA · December 19–22, 2006 · Four classes

The first Dharma Essentials course in the archive: four evenings on meditation with Lama Marut, Rockport, December 2006.

Just before Christmas 2006, Lama Marut spent four evenings in Rockport in Cape Ann, Massachusetts, teaching the third course in the Dharma Essentials series: Applied Meditation.

The course is based on The Stages of Meditation by Master Kamalaśīla.

Lama Marut explains that meditation is “habituating the mind” to something worthwhile. He also reviews what kind of life supports our meditation such as living simply and ethically, practicing contentment and taking quiet time. Also reviewed is the meditation posture and preliminaries, the five problems that come up on the cushion and how to correct them, and the nine stages of meditation, using the Lam Rim as the material to meditate on.

Each class ends with a guided meditation.

This course was organised and hosted by Lindsay Crouse and Rick Blue.

Lama Marut taught these courses as the essentialised version of Geshe Michael Roach's 18 Asian Classics Institute courses. The full ACI courses can be found at The Knowledge Base.Visit The Knowledge Base →

All four classes are now available to listen to and download, along with the course reading.
